Schupan Person of the Year
With his usual modesty, local business leader Marc Schupan accepted an award as Person of the Year from Guardian Finance and Advocacy Services.
CEO of Schupan & Sons in Kalamazoo, he is also a supporter of charities. Besides Guardian, these include American Diabetes Association, United Way, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
While accepting the award, Schupan noted that he was fortunate to be in a position to help. He quoted his mother’s guidance to work hard and lend a hand to others. “Keep up your enthusiasm for this great cause” was his advice to the Guardian board and staff.
Guardian board president Sherri Meachum presented a humorous sketch of Schupan by Battle Creek artist Charles Rose. It shows him fishing, a favorite pastime, with references to the various charities that he supports.
Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell proclaimed October 28 as “Marc Schupan Day” and Meachum presented that certificate along with a letter of congratulations from U. S. Congressman Fred Upton.
Schupan and Sons is a leading recycler. Incorporated in 1968 as a non-ferrous industrial scrap processor, they expanded into a number of primarily metal and plastic related areas. They are one of the largest volume processors and brokers of used beverage containers in the U.S.
